So we're quite relieved to report the arrival at last of the all-new Saab 9-5 to replace its now 12-year-old predecessor.

The 9-5 comes in the choice of three turbo-petrol engines � from a 120kW 1.6 to a 225kW 2.8-litre V6 and a pair 125 and 140kW 2-litre turbodiesels. Saab is likely to add hybrid technology or a start-stop-system later. The new flagship rides on Opel's acclaimed new Insignia platform also shared with the Chevy Cruze, due in South Africa in a matter of weeks

At 5.01m long, 9-5 once again competes with the likes of Audi A6, BMW 5 and Mercedes E class � it's 17cm longer than the old car and on a 13cm longer wheelbase 9-5 keeps its sizeable cabin and cavernous boot � sucking in all of 513 litres if need be.

Carrying Saab's latest styling cues forward, there's no mistaking new 9-5's origins with definite Saab cues blended in with generous helpings of LEDs, darkened glass and chrome.

9-5 will once again come in Linear, Vector and Aero specification and the and inside it's typically Saab. A central starter button for the now keyless ignition (Saab has always had the ignition between the seats) and a driver-centric cockpit to cosset the driver to further differentiate it from the Insignia it shares its soul with.

9-5 also boasts niceties like a heads-up-display, automatic park control, a three-way adjustable suspension set-up allowing comfort, sport and intelligent) bi-xenon-curve lighting, a Panasonic Navigation system with 8-inch touchscreen-monitor and a sound system courtesy of Harman & Kardon.

Prices are yet to be confirmed but are expected to undercut the Audi A6 in Europe. Saab's future is also set to be confirmed within days � with Swedixsch supercarmaker Koenigsegg expected to take control. The brand's South African future (it really deserves so much more) and 9-5's arrival here should be confirmed shortly after that...
